WHY ARE WE HERE?

IN JULY 2020, a GROUP OF NEIGHBOURS STUMBLED UPON A CAMPAIGN TO HAVE THEIR ROADS BLOCKED.

FOR EVERYTHING LTN (LOW TRAFFIC NEIGHBOURHOOD) PLEASE SCROLL TO THE VERY BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE

For RESIDENTS OF THE WIMBLEDON CHASE AREA

We have been told (again on Social Media NOT by our council or councillors) that the initial Whatley Avenue / Joseph Hood** School Streets** initiative has (due to residents protests) been shelved! (Find out more about that scheme below) HOWEVER It has been brought to our attention (social media only) another "scheme" has been proposed & accepted (Therefore we MUST Get our objections in quickly). This scheme is detailed here. CLOSING RIGHT TURN FROM BOTSFORD ROAD INTO WHATLEY AVENUE, WIMBLEDON CHASE

The proposed prohibition of right turns from Botsford Road will NOT stop traffic flow, it will simply bottle neck it & shift the flow to small neighbouring roads. We residents are not unsympathetic to our neighbours plights BUT the use of existing legislation WOULD affect the flow of traffic. * Issuing fines for breaking the areas 20mph speed limit. * Issuing parking fines to those who regularly park badly outside Joseph Hood School & on Whatley Avenue. * Put in road bumps to curb speed. You can clearly see there are not many options for the traffic to use if forced to change its (Short & simple) journey. Many who are not local & have no knowledge of these roads will find themselves in a cul-de-sacs (Avalon / Mawson) or heading down Haynt Walk (with 2 Blind bends & a Cul-de-sac).

* OFFICIAL COUNCIL PROPOSAL CAN BE SEEN BY CLICKING HERE* This proposal is badly thought out at best & dangerous at worst. CALL

EMAIL Trafficandhighways@Merton.gov.uk To voice your concerns. or EMAIL info@ResidentsMatter.uk to get some posters / leaflets & lets let the resdients KNOW what Merton are planning to do to our neighbourhood & how disgusted we are!

(We are sure this has nothing to do with the ludicrous amount of fines this will generate) *sarcasm

LOW TRAFFIC NEIGHBOURHOODS INFO

Another group has started to push the LTN's explaining that they are doing this as they liked the quieter streets and cleaner air during lockdown. They state they believe thats Low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) offer the chance to make our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists. LTNs are put in using stealth emergency orders - consultation starts AFTER they are in, and will last for a period of months. If you use your vehicle to travel to work, to care for a loved one, to take your tools of your trade with you - THESE LTN's affect you! Make sure YOU stand up! We are not all Cyclists, our wonderfull rich neighbourhood has the elderly, the disabled amongst it, people who need their cars & access to health clinics, hospitals, friends, family, shops....Those implementing the scheme are proudly *NOT *allowing consultation with residents. Scroll to end of page for sample Objection Email. Get your objections in Quickly! residents from boroughs who have been impacted by these ludicrous schemes have spoken of near miss accidents, elderly & disbaled having no way of getting into transport, no pedestrian waiting areas for public transport, no access for emergency vehicles etc.

RESIDENTS MATTER

The initial proposed Wimbledon Chase SCHOOL STREETS SCHEME was blocked thanks to local residents emailing the local authority & standing up for themselves. They cited reasons shown below & more (adding in personal reasons is always good). PLEASE feel free to use these as a basis for emails against the ever growing LTN schemes which are being implemented without any local consultations.

  1. Lack of thought given to the impact of traffic / polution through idling to local streets.
  2. Lack of acknowledgement of already short supply of parking spaces
  3. Lack of appreciation of cost impact to residents (friends / families / carers etc
  4. Lack of thought of space for workers (Builders / Plumbers /Roofers etc etc) to travel / work in / around the roads we live in.
  5. Lack of actual study of the effect of behaviour of motorists (anger toward local residents / other motorists) who will be caught up in this "Rat-Run".
  6. Lack of study of impact on local small businness / economy (we have many small businesses who use vans / drive to work during the proposed closure hours).
  7. Lack of study of accidents in and around the local impacted roads. IE: is your road only able to have 1 car pass at a time in some parts, so causing anger / agressive drivving.
  8. Will ambulances & other emergency vehicles be able to get through roads / pull up at sides of roads where the red & white blockades have now been placed?
  9. Can the disabled / elderly, safley alight from public transport now the blockades are in place (There has already been an accident in Wandsworth where an elderly man had to alight in the road as the blockade allowed for a cycle path) then had to cross the cycle path to the pavement. A cycle almost ran into him (as cycles do not need to stop on cycle lanes) & he fell into the wall.

Please let us know below of any other objections and we will list them for others to use against LTN's (Lower Traffic Neighbourhood schemes)

Make sure YOU object to SCHOOL STREETS & LTN's if they negatively affect you & your vibrant neighbourhoods -

EXAMPLE EMAIL - PLEASE change bits to fit your scheme / area

As a local resident of XXXXX, I object to the proposed plans for the local LTN. I oppose these plans and demand an opportunity to be consulted so that the final plans benefit all residents. Whilst I of course support the objective of reducing traffic and improving the environment, I don’t believe this proposal is fit for purpose and has flaws. The essence of my objection is: The proposals have not been published for consultation and therefore the residents have not been afforded the chance to consider the matter. This is undemocratic, non-transparent and a failure of the Local Authority to serve the community responsibly. The closure of and / or narrowing of local roads will divert traffic onto already narrower, quieter residential roads. This will add traffic onto these minor roads, reduce air quality and add dangers to residents and their children going about their lives. From speaking to neighbours & friends who both live and work in this community, the lack of transparency has made people these proposals affect very angry. Therefore, I believe you should at the very least share the following information before any more LTN planning / construction is continued.

Many proposed plans for the area already look to be totally impractical and contravene the overall LTN objectives, as should the proposed plan be submitted and accepted in its current form, much of the traffic will struggle to flow bi-directionally, as many of the routes are too narrow. This is likely to create significant congestion which will increase engine idling and increase fuel consumption, thereby delivering a negative impact on the quality of air. I am also concerned that congestion/road blockages may cause problems for emergency service access. There are many elderly and vulnerable residents in poor health who now, due to Covid, have an increased dependency on emergency and medical services, when timely interventions can be critical. I truly believe this plan to be completely ageist & discriminatory against the majority of XXXXXX ageing residents. Along with my concerns for the emergency services (fire & ambulance), I worry about the impact this scheme will have on local public services and the access they require weekly to conduct their duties. The current scheme makes no provision for an alternate route for traffic to enter or leave the affected area. This means when public service vehicles perform their duties (Waste management / Highways etc), all impacted residences will be placed in gridlock with little or no vehicular access. Lastly, I object to the plan to implement this without proper consultation. There has been no public consultation, in fact it has been proudly stated that there will not be a consultation period before this trial starts, but a review conducted post trial. This is totally undemocratic and will cause 6 months of stress and chaos for a huge proportion of residents at a time (Covid-19) when many are already suffering hugely both physically, mentally and financially. I do not accept that it is democratic for consultations to start only after the scheme/trial has been implemented. I believe that you are abusing emergency measures which were intended to solve far greater problems and are misusing the funds available by implementing the LTN’s without proper research into the short-term and long-term impact. I therefore demand residents should be consulted prior to any continuation of the scheme.
